Old King’s Road Extension Opens Today

Ribbon cutting at 10:000 A.M. This is the third big road improvement event of 2016. It follows the opening of the Palm Harbor Pkwy extension and the new Matanzas Woods Pkwy/Interstate 95 interchange.

PALM COAST, FL – June 27, 2016 – A 10:00 A.M. ribbon cutting today will mark the official opening of the Old King’s Road extension to Matanzas Woods Pkwy. This will be the third major road project completion this year on Palm Coast’s north side. The Palm Harbor Pkwy extension and the new Interstate 95 interchange at Matanzas Woods Pkwy were the others.

The Flagler County Board of County Commissioners will host the ribbon cutting. All are invited to attend.

The new four lane roadway stretches 0.7 miles between Forest Grove Drive and Matanzas Woods Parkway, filling a gap in Old King’s and improving access to I-95 via the new interchange and to US1 beyond.

“The Extension has come together so quickly. We can measure this one in months, instead of years,” said Flagler County Engineer Faith Alkhatib, a reference to the County’s recently completed I-95 interchange. “We entered into an interlocal agreement with the City of Palm Coast, and broke ground just last August. Now we’re attending to final touches and ready for traffic, within budget and ahead of schedule.”

Flagler County managed oversight of the project which was funded entirely by a Florida Department of Transportation grant. 

“This project represents a great collaboration between the County and the City of Palm Coast,” said County Administrator Craig Coffey.

The $6.7 million total cost includes design provided by England-Thims and Miller, construction provided by Petticoat-Schmitt Civil Engineers, and the required construction engineering and inspection (CEI) component, provided by Tierra Inc.

“This regional artery is so critical to our County, both in terms of emergency management and for day-to-day travel needs,” said Commissioner Nate McLaughlin, who will lead the ribbon cutting event. “My affiliation with this project is long standing.  It goes all the way back to when I was Chair of the Planning Board of the City of Palm Coast and we envisioned both the King’s Road and the Palm Harbor Parkway upgrades.”

Guests for the ribbon cutting will need to access Old King’s Road from Matanzas Woods Parkway, where staff will guide attendees to parking. The extension will remain closed for the event and open to traffic later in the day.
