New Military Property Tax Exemption Deadline – June 1, 2011

A voter approved Property Tax Exemption is available for the 2011 tax year for military personnel deployed outside the United States.

Palm Coast, FL – May 20, 2011 – According to Flagler County Property Appraiser, James E. Gardner, Jr., CFA, a voter approved Property Tax Exemption is available for the 2011 tax year for military personnel deployed outside the United States. The enabling legislation for the exemption is presently awaiting the Governor’s signature.

This new exemption will be for service members who currently receive the Homestead exemption on their primary residence. The amount of the exemption is based upon the number of days deployed divided by the number of days in the prior year. This ratio is then applied against the property’s taxable value to compute the additional exemption. The current qualifying deployments are Enduring Freedom, Iraqi Freedom and New Dawn. The service member or approved designee will be required to complete an application and provide proof of eligible deployment.

Gardner asks for the general public’s help in identifying eligible service members who may be currently serving our county and not aware of this new benefit.
